Hwy. 13 Crowley TOM mi MARKSVILLE, La. (AP) Former insurance agency owner Andre D. Coco has begun serving a five-year prison term for stealing more than $1.6 million from premium finance companies.

The former mayor of Marksville reported to the Avoyelles Parish jail Friday evening, hours after he pleaded guilty to four counts of theft by fraud. Judge William A. Culpepper sentenced Coco, 51, to 10 years in prison after accepting his guilty plea Friday, but suspended half of the term as part of a plea bargain which Coco made with prosecutors. Coco agreed to drop appeals of a related conviction on 14 counts of forgery and a challenge contending that the theft trial amounted to double jeopardy. In a written statement released after his court appearance, Coco said he didn't realize his actions were illegal.

"The actions were strictly done to help a struggling business. I now realize that my actions were improper and I am prepared to pay my debt to, society through the sentence," he wrote. The theft sentence will run at the same time as the forgery sentence. Knoll said Coco will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of the five-year term. Coco will also be on probation for three years when he finishes his prison time.

Knoll said the state Department of Correcuons will determine where Coco will serve his time. Coco was charged with stealing $298,401 from Plymouth Finance Inc. of Hialcah, between May 1988 and April 1989; $844,576 from Premium Finance Co. of Bunkie between July 1988 and April 1989; $365,437 from Oupac Inc. of Opelousas between August 1988 and April 1989; and $237,623 from Afco Credit Corp.

ACADIA, From Pg. 1 downs released last week were based on those 3,785 teachers' scores from the 66 school districts throughout the state. "We are pleased so many teachers are doing well," he said. "These latest results validate what we have believed all along, which is almost all teachers do a good job, and many are outstanding. Statewide, 90 percent of the teachers evaluated have passed the test the report showed, twnety-six percent of those teachers rated superior.

Nine parishes had 100 percent of their teachers scoring in the satisfactory range, and between 95 and 99 percent of the teachers evaluated in another nine parishes exceeded the minimum state standards, between 90 and 94 percent of the teachers in another 20 school systems also passed the evaluations, Cody said. At least 30 percent of the teachers in 18 school districts rated superior in the first year's evaluations, while 25 to 29 percent of the evaluated teachers in 10 other systems scored above average. In Claiborne, Morehouse, Sabine and Tensas parishes and the City of Bogalusa, data was incomplete because not enough teachers had finished the evaluation process when the report was compiled.
